White Sands National Park

White Sands is now one of the newest National Parks. The US House of Representatives passed an act on December 11 and President Trump signed the bill a couple days later making it official.

A common mineral known as gypsum is very soft and makes it possible to reflect light. White Sands is actually a very humid location which aids in keeping the dunes in place. The dunes are thought to be very old and started forming many years ago.

Due to attempts to profit on the sand local lobbyists set out to protect the sand dunes. Commercialization failed anyways due to the lack of demand for the type of product. White Sands was named a national monument in 1933.
